About Australian Fine China
Founded in 1921, over the years the business has changed names several times. Originally incorporated as the Calyx Porcelain and Paint Company, the business traded under that name until the early 1940’s. In the 1930’s the business became a victim of the depression and was transferred to government ownership. In a nationalised state the business continued to make tableware, giftware and sanitary ware – still under the Calyx trade name.

On 31st May 1941 management of the business was taken over by the firm of HL Brisbane and Wunderlich whose business was focussed of the manufacture of roofing tiles and pressed steel. Almost immediately the branding became "Bristile” or "B&W” and, most famously, "Wembley Ware” named after the suburb on whose borders the plant was located. Wembley Ware is much sought after by collectors today with individual pieces fetching hundreds, if not thousands of dollars.

During the war years, the difficulties of importation of suitable quantities of crockery saw the business developing vitrified hotelwares – particularly for use by the Armed Forces and this set the stage for the discontinuation, in 1962, of all production of "fancywares”. The business dropped all references to Wembley Ware and its products became simple Bristile and later Bristile Fine China.

From 1962 until 1992 virtually all sales made were to the hotel and restaurant trade, and exclusively with Australian Made product. Only in 1992, with the development of some striking new decorations on tableware, did Bristile Fine China again come to be sold in the retail environment. It was not until after 1995 and considerable development on design of specific lines of products that our entry into the retail market became the success it is today.

Concurrent with its decision to re-enter the market the company dropped references to Bristile Ltd and fashioned its brand as "Australian Fine China”.

The final chapter in the company’s ownership history in the first 82 years of its life began in 1992 with the takeover of Bristile Ltd by Futuris Corporation Limited. Bristile Ltd was re-organised and re-floated in 1997 and Australian Fine China was transferred from Bristile Ltd ownership by Futuris Corporation Limited which remains it owner today.
