A springform pan is one that has the base and sides as separate pieces, which is held together at the base with a groove that rings the bottom of the walls. This is then secured with a latch on the exterior of the sides, which tightens the separate pieces. Then, when required, the sides can be removed once baking has finished and present your creation without the hassle of having to take it out of the pan.
The springform pan is best suited for dishes that cannot be easily inverted for removal from the pan.
